According to demonstrations released by the company, the updated end-effectors allow the bipedal machine to perform high-precision tasks such as manipulating tools, fastening zippers, inserting charging cables, and pouring liquids. The system can also grasp delicate or small items and manage basic sanitation routines, including washing its own hands.
Tactile Feedback and Grip Modulation
A primary hurdle for humanoid domestic robots has been preventing damage to fragile household items during physical interaction. 1X claims its new mechanism integrates pressure-sensing capabilities that allow the fingers to gauge resistance in real time and modulate grip force accordingly, rather than relying solely on rigid positional coordinates.
The tactile sensitivity is designed to let the robot switch between holding rigid tools and gripping deformable objects without crushing them—an essential capability if general-purpose humanoids are to operate safely around everyday consumer goods.
Commercial Strategy and Pricing
Alongside the hardware reveal, 1X outlined commercial availability for NEO. The humanoid is being offered at a starting purchase price of $20,000, accompanied by a subscription alternative priced at $499 per month.
Dexterous manipulation remains one of the most stubborn engineering bottlenecks in the robotics sector. While locomotion and basic pick-and-place routines have advanced significantly among competitors like Figure AI and Tesla's Optimus, transitioning from curated video demonstrations to robust, autonomous manipulation in unstructured home settings has historically proved difficult. Whether 1X's sensory approach can reliably bridge that gap under real-world conditions will determine if its entry-level pricing gains traction.
