Apple's ongoing experiments with foldable smartphone designs are coalescing around a book-style device that prioritizes screen real estate and mechanical durability over several established iPhone staples.

According to recent supply chain and prototyping reports, the experimental hardware makes notable departures from the company's current flagship lineup. Test units reportedly drop the TrueDepth sensor array used for Face ID, relying instead on Touch ID biometrics. Apple has also omitted a dedicated telephoto camera on early prototypes, likely a concession aimed at managing internal component volume and overall device thickness.

Hinge Mechanics and Display Engineering

Much of Apple's current engineering effort is centered on the folding mechanism itself. The company is actively working to minimize the visible center crease that has long affected rival foldable panels, pairing a custom hinge assembly with a flexible internal display.

On the software side, the unfolded inner panel is designed to bridge the gap between iOS and iPadOS. Test builds reportedly adapt running applications into tablet-style dual-pane layouts, while also leveraging the expanded screen real estate as an oversized viewfinder for photography.

The reported compromises highlight the difficult engineering trade-offs inherent to the foldable form factor.
