In her book Coding Kids, Natasha Singer, an education technology reporter at The New York Times, outlines how major technology firms used curriculum gifts and low-cost hardware to cultivate future consumers and workers. Speaking on a recent podcast with The Verge, Singer warned that schools risk repeating past mistakes unless guardrails are established before generative AI systems become institutional fixtures.

A Decade of Vendor Capture

Starting more than ten years ago, companies including Apple and Microsoft embedded their proprietary software, such as Apple's Swift language and Microsoft's Minecraft, directly into Advanced Placement Computer Science courses. Around the same period, Google established widespread dominance through the rollout of inexpensive Chromebooks and its Classroom portal, an adoption cycle that accelerated during remote learning in the covid-19 pandemic.

Nonprofit initiatives amplified the corporate reach. Code.org, founded by tech entrepreneur Hadi Partovi, used high-profile promotional campaigns featuring Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg to popularize coding in public classrooms. These hour-long introductory modules faced little pedagogical scrutiny at the time.

The Broken Promise of the Coding Boom

The long-term return on that curriculum overhaul has drawn increasing skepticism. Many recent graduates have entered a cooling job market with diminished entry-level software openings, while broader educational research shows that increased screen time and device usage have failed to deliver meaningful learning improvements.

The push to integrate generative AI highlights an enduring tension between commercial product distribution and foundational learning. When technology companies supply platforms and teaching materials free of charge, public school systems frequently trade pedagogical independence for vendor lock-in. Instead of learning durable, platform-agnostic concepts, students are often trained to operate within a specific company's ecosystem.

Districts Begin to Resist

Unlike the unchecked rollout of coding software in the 2010s, AI is encountering immediate resistance from school boards and parents. New York City recently prohibited elementary and middle school students from using AI tools in class, while the Los Angeles Unified School District implemented even stricter policies that encompass high school classrooms.

Singer noted that while skepticism is growing, the objective should not be removing technology entirely. Instead, the goal is teaching students to evaluate the commercial incentives behind software design and question how algorithmic tools influence their choices, rather than allowing tech companies to dictate what belongs in the classroom.
