Google Rolls Out Motion Sickness Shield and Gemini-Powered Accessibility to Android

Google is rolling out a batch of Android updates aimed at cutting down passenger motion sickness, expanding accessibility tools for visually impaired users, and weaving its Gemini assistant deeper into day-to-day phone tasks.

Leading the release for Android 17 devices is Motion Assist, a system tool that places animated bubble overlays on the screen that react to a vehicle's kinetic movement. The feature seeks to alleviate motion sickness by reconciling the sensory conflict between physical motion and static on-screen text. Users can customize the bubble's opacity, color, and shape, set it to trigger automatically, or manage it via the Quick Settings shade. The concept mirrors Apple's rollout of Vehicle Motion Cues, which introduced edge-of-screen motion dots in 2024.

Multimodal Vision and Memory Tools

For accessibility, Google is introducing Guided Vision for smartphones running Android 9 or later in regions where its AI assistant operates. The tool combines the device camera with Gemini to read small typography on labels, decipher dark restaurant menus, and identify household objects. If a user aims the camera off-target, the tool issues real-time voice instructions to pan or center the phone.

Gemini is also expanding into physical item tracking. Inside Find Hub, users can now log the location of physical possessions, such as passports or spare keys, by speaking to Gemini and attaching reference photos to retrieve later.

Messages and iOS Parity

Within communications, Google Messages is gaining an embedded Google Keep tool that allows users to view, share, and collaborate on checklists or notes without leaving a chat thread. The messaging client is also picking up individual chat background themes, custom photos, and color-matched text bubbles, adopting visual flexibility similar to updates Apple introduced to its own messaging platform.
