Instagram is escalating its clampdown on synthetic personas, warning creators that accounts featuring artificial intelligence-generated people without clear disclosure will face algorithmic reach penalties.

Under the updated policy reported by TechCrunch, the social network is replacing its existing "AI creator" label with a more explicit tag: "AI-generated profile." The moniker is designed to signal directly to audiences when an account's depicted persona was substantially created by software rather than being an actual person.

Meta confirmed that creators who use the transparency tag will not suffer distribution penalties simply for running a virtual persona. However, accounts attempting to pass off computer-generated likenesses as authentic individuals risk significant suppression across the platform's feeds and recommendations.

Narrowing the Scope

The mandate does not apply to routine AI assistance. Instagram clarified that creators using generative tools for minor photo editing, drafting captions, or designing graphics are not required to adopt the profile-level label.

The enforcement shift follows mounting user complaints about accounts masquerading as living people. Synthetic influencers have multiplied across digital platforms, often deployed in deceptive promotional campaigns. Investigations earlier this year uncovered networks of automated male personas directing users to the dating app Goose through direct messages, while hundreds of fabricated doctors and wellness figures were found dispensing health advice and peddling supplements across social networks.

Why It Matters

Social platforms are struggling to navigate the rapid normalization of hyper-realistic digital humans, which pose unprecedented challenges for authenticity, consumer trust, and advertiser safety. For Meta, tightening the rules around synthetic identity represents a defensive maneuver to clean up feeds before deceptive AI personas cause deeper reputational and regulatory fallout.
