The Scale ReportMicrosoft is significantly upgrading its Copilot AI system to grant the assistant direct control over local files and specific operating system functions. This shift relies on a framework dubbed Hybrid Intelligence, which leverages a combination of local and cloud-based AI models to execute complex user requests.
Demonstrating Hybrid Intelligence
Jacob Andreou, executive vice president of Copilot at Microsoft, showcased the technology by instructing an AI agent to prepare documents for tax filing. The system autonomously navigated local folders to locate necessary files, renamed them, compressed the data, and drafted an outgoing email for the user. According to The Scale Report, this indicates a move away from passive chatbot interactions toward active, agentic OS management.
Enhancing System Search
Beyond file manipulation, the company is refining the Windows search experience. Pavan Davuluri, head of Windows and Surface, announced that users will soon be able to perform system-level tasks directly from the search bar, including volume adjustments, toggling interface themes, or sending text messages.
This progression toward agentic computing is significant because it shifts the OS from a static environment to one that acts as a proactive assistant. By utilizing Hybrid Intelligence to minimize latency and improve data privacy via local processing, Microsoft aims to make AI deeply embedded in the daily utility of its platform rather than acting merely as an overlay.
Microsoft plans to roll out these Hybrid Intelligence features over the next few months, while the updated search functionality is scheduled to arrive on Windows 11 PCs later this fall.
