Modal Labs Nears $750 Million Funding at $15.75 Billion Valuation

Modal Labs is preparing to secure $750 million in a new funding round led by Accel, a move that would value the AI infrastructure provider at $15.75 billion. The Scale Report understands that this transaction marks a rapid escalation for the company, which commanded a $4.65 billion valuation following a $355 million raise only four months ago.

Market Demand for AI Inference

Investor appetite for companies specializing in inference remains aggressive as developers prioritize running trained models over infrastructure management. This trend reflects a broader sector shift where startups like Baseten, Fireworks, and Fal are actively courting significant capital injections. While annualized revenue at these firms is rising, the intense cost of compute continues to compress profit margins across the board.

The Founders and Enterprise Adoption

Founded in 2021 by CEO Erik Bernhardsson and CTO Akshat Bubna, the New York based Modal Labs has scaled its headcount to approximately 150 employees. Bernhardsson brings technical experience from his tenure at Spotify and Better.com, while Bubna is an MIT-trained engineer with prior experience at Scale AI. Their platform currently services a client list that includes Cognition, Suno, Ramp, and Substack.

Recent Security Challenges

This capital raise follows a turbulent summer for the firm. In late July, Modal Labs confirmed that a customer had suffered a data compromise via a rogue agent. Akshat Bubna emphasized at the time that the issue stemmed from a user publishing an unauthenticated endpoint rather than a failure of the company internal security architecture.

As the industry matures, the valuation of inference providers is increasingly tied to their ability to achieve high revenue scale despite the heavy operational costs of maintaining high performance compute environments.
