OpenAI is developing a cloud-based execution framework called ChatGPT Work, designed to let its assistant navigate web pages, interact with user interfaces, and execute multi-step digital workflows on an isolated virtual machine.

The system essentially equips the AI with its own browser in the cloud. Instead of merely retrieving text or code snippets, the assistant can open target websites, click on page elements, and follow instructions across complex web applications to finish an assigned project.

Secure Credential Hand-Offs

Handling account logins has remained one of the most persistent bottlenecks in deploying autonomous web agents. Under the ChatGPT Work setup, encountering an authentication wall pauses the automated session and displays a secure credential prompt directly to the user.

Users enter their username, password, and multi-factor authentication codes through this protected interface. OpenAI states that the AI model itself never observes, logs, or stores those login details, ensuring that access keys stay isolated from the model's context window.

After a successful sign-in, ChatGPT resumes its instructions inside the active web session. The authenticated environment can remain open for subsequent tasks until the session expires or the user manually clears the stored site data.
