PGA Tour and LeBron James Family Foundation to Launch Invitational at Firestone in 2027

The PGA Tour is partnering with the LeBron James Family Foundation to stage a new developmental tournament in Akron, Ohio, starting in 2027.

Dubbed the LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational, the two-day competition will take place at the historic Firestone Country Club. The field will consist of professional and amateur golfers competing under the umbrella of the PGA Tour's Pathway to Progression program, an initiative designed to expand access and developmental pathways for underrepresented talent in professional golf.

Beyond tournament play, the event is designed to integrate James's philanthropic infrastructure directly with the golf ecosystem. Students enrolled in the foundation's I Promise program will participate in mentorship sessions with competing golfers, aiming to expose local youth to career and athletic pathways connected to the sport.

Broadening the Pipeline

Michele Campbell, executive director of the foundation, noted that the initiative focuses on advancing diversity within the sport while offering practical exposure to Akron students.

For the PGA Tour, aligning with James’s foundation provides cultural leverage and community buy-in as it tries to diversify a sport historically plagued by high financial and demographic barriers to entry. Firestone Country Club, long a standard stop on the professional circuit until the World Golf Championships departed in 2018, offers a high-profile backdrop to test whether developmental tournaments paired with youth mentorship can create lasting pipeline changes.
