The Scale ReportAs gaming studios rush to adopt generative tools to curb rising production costs, Rockstar Games is moving in the opposite direction for its flagship title. Parent company Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that generative AI played zero role in constructing the open-world environment for Grand Theft Auto 6.
The sheer scope of the studio's manual development pipeline is evident in its animation library. GTA 6 reportedly incorporates upwards of 600,000 individual animations. That represents a dramatic escalation in fidelity, doubling the roughly 300,000 animations produced for Red Dead Redemption 2 and dwarfing the approximately 55,000 used in Grand Theft Auto V.
Bespoke Worldbuilding
To populate its fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar established a dedicated internal team focused exclusively on making non-playable characters feel distinct and realistic. Rather than relying on procedural generation to fill in background assets, artists directed micro-level visual details, including specific drink choices, custom tattoos, framed photographs, and localized wear marks on furniture.
Take-Two executives noted that while the broader corporation uses machine learning tools across select enterprise workflows, Rockstar's creative pipeline remains intentionally handcrafted. The developer has long relied on labor-intensive, bespoke design to establish its industry benchmark for environmental simulation.
Why It Matters
The move underscores a widening philosophical divide across the video game industry. While mid-tier studios increasingly look to generative models to shorten multi-year production cycles, top-tier publishers with virtually guaranteed blockbusters are treating human craftsmanship as a premium differentiator. Whether other developers can afford to bypass algorithmic shortcuts as production budgets regularly cross the half-billion-dollar mark remains a central question for the medium.
